The ´´American Scientific´´ review published in its March 1977 edition (Vol 236,3) an article entitled ´´The Earliest Maya´´, by Norman Hammond, of Cambridge University, England.
A team of archaelogists explored a site at Cuello, Belize, Yucatan Peninsula, 5 Kms., from Orange Walk.
Explorations began in 1975 and were centered in a platform marked with number 34 in the Cuello map. The excavation reached the floor of the primitive structure upon which the ´´pyramid´´ was built (there are no real pyramids in the Americas, but flattened seudo-pyramidal structures. JDB). The excavation went down 4 meters reaching the ground, where found ceramic remains correspondign to the Formative Period of Mayan culture.
That kind of ceramics was of an unknown style and was called Swasey Ceramic, Swasey being the name of a river that runs near the site.
